South Indian film industry is reaching new heights with the release of each film. Yes! You read that right, this may come as a shock to many, but many actors have been accused of the same thing over the years. But, while some actors buried the news as soon as it hit the headlines, some tax cheats never saw the light of day, thanks to their strong connections. So, without further ado, let’s jump right into the list of South Indian celebrities, who are alleged to have been involved in tax evasion!

#1. Nayanthara

In December 2015, the income tax department raided the South Indian cinema superstar, Nayanthara’s residence. The raid had hit the headlines as it did back when so many high-profile celebrities in South India’s film industry were accused of tax evasion. When IT officials conducted the raid, they were asked to share the exact details of the amount recovered from Nayanthara. The officials had avoided the question. However, they confirmed that Nayanthara was not paying his full tax amount and making a partial evasion.

#2. Thalapathy Vijay

South Indian superstar, Thalapathy Vijay needs no introduction as he is one of the most beloved and admired actors in the country. However, in 2015, when the Income Tax Department raided Vijay’s residence and offices, it was revealed that the actor had evaded taxes for the past five years. It was a heartbreaking moment for most of his fans, as it’s something you wouldn’t expect from an actor of such stature. However, over time, fans calmed down and forgave Vijay for what he had done, and the actor continues to be one of the most bankable actors in India.

#3. Samantha Ruth Prabhu


The year 2015 is still considered to be one of the darkest years in the lives of South Indian actors who were tax evaders as it was the year when the tax department the revenue had conducted searches in 35 different locations in Chennai, Cochin, Hyderabad, Madurai and Trivandrum. Many well-known actors, producers and people associated with South Indian film industry have been accused of tax evasion, and one of these celebrities was popular actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu. In a conversation with The Hindu, an income tax official had opened up about the raids on the respective residences of Samantha, Vijay and Nayanthara and said:

“We raided the offices and premises of ten people including actor Vijay, Samantha and Nayanthara and recovered cash and gold. Rs 2 million.”

#4. Mohanlal


Often regarded as the greatest South Indian actor of all time, Mohanlal holds an incredible fan base across the globe. However, even he would be accused of tax evasion. In 2011, Mohanlal’s residence and offices were raided by the Income Tax Department. Although the extent of the revenue cut has not been made public, it was revealed that Mohanlal admitted his mistake and allegedly told officials to settle his dues carefully in the future.

#5. Nagarjuna

If reports are to be believed, the income tax department had found numerous discrepancies in the income tax records of South Indian actor Nagarjuna in 2011. As a result , the department had raided his residence and office. According to income tax department sources, most of the flaws were found in the Akkineni family’s property purchases. What is strange is that the actor had always denied reports suggesting that a search had taken place at his home. However, a source close to the Income Tax Department was quoted by The Times Of India as saying:

“Advance filings for this year also did not account for Nagarjuna’s recent purchases from Vizag. In addition, accounts regarding his recent investments in the N-Convention Center and the N-Grill restaurant on 6 acres of land opposite of Hitech City, said to be worth more than Rs. 500 crore, is unclear.

#6. Jr NTR


Popular South Indian actor, Jr. NTR made headlines in 2016 when his highly anticipated film, Nannaku Premaatho, has been freed. However, as soon as the film was released, it got stuck in a major controversy that featured the income tax department. According to the report published by The Comptroller Audit General (CAG), it was reported that Jr NTR had not paid the service tax. The report had created a big stir in the news as it stated that Jr NTR had been exempted from paying Rs. 1.10 crore out of the amount of Rs. 7.33 crore he received as a fee acting in Nannaku Premaatho.
