Gloucester landowner recognized for land management efforts – Gazette Journal

John Elkin Jr. of Hunters LLC and Bigfoot LLC recently received the 2021 Forest Management Best Practices Award from the Tidewater Soil and Water Conservation District.

Elkin has managed agricultural and forestry land in Gloucester County since 2005, and nearly a quarter of its land is used to protect water quality as riparian management areas, according to a TSWCD statement.

Elkin approached his two land purchases from an early stewardship perspective. He did some of the work himself, such as pre-commercial thinning with a brush cutter, spraying areas by tractor for site preparation and weed control, and burning for site preparation. He maintains the hunting paths on both properties to prevent erosion through proper grading techniques and establishing wildflower mixes on loose soil. Elkin took the time to attend woodlot owner education events, including a longleaf pine program, and became a certified prescribed burn manager in Virginia.
