The latest ad from the American Action Network is full of dishonest claims.
A new black money ad aimed at stopping President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better Jobs plan falsely claims the proposal includes $ 80 billion in “handouts for illegal immigrants.” But the funds in question would actually be used to support children born in the United States.
Announcement, broadcast in Arizona by the American Action Network, urges Democratic Representative Tom O’Halloran to “protect” the state border and oppose what he calls “the tax and financial scam “from the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi.
“The Liberals spend your money but take care of themselves. It’s a cynical game in Washington,” a narrator said in the 30-second spot. “Two hundred million for a park in the Pelosi district. Special tax breaks for Hollywood, the media, elite liberal universities. but get less. “
The $ 80 billion figure comes from an October 5 article on the right-wing The Federalist about a report by the Center for Immigration Studies, which has been named an anti-immigrant hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. . The story and report argue that undocumented parents and guardians of children born in the United States would receive some $ 8.2 billion per year through an expanded child tax credit. Over 10 years, the total would be around $ 80 billion. Both sources acknowledge that families were already eligible for funds under the old version of the child tax credit, but would now get more.
But the funds are hardly a “handout” for undocumented migrants, despite the publicity and report aimed at demonizing immigrant parents of children eligible for the credit.
The goal of the credit, worth up to $ 300 per month per child and enacted for 2021 as part of Biden’s US bailout, is to reduce child poverty. A report released in August by analysts at the Center on Poverty and Social Policy at Columbia University found that the program lifted 3 million children out of poverty in the first month and said, “If all the children likely to be entitled are covered, it has the potential to reduce child poverty by up to 40 percent on its own. ”Biden and Congressional Democrats hope to expand the program as part of the job offer.
False claims that the plan would hurt most small businesses and working families were also debunked, and the park’s $ 200 million in funding would go to improving the San Francisco Presidio, a national park overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay. which is visited by 7.5 million people each year.
The American Action Network was established in 2010 and is chaired by former Republican Senator Norm Coleman of Minnesota. As a tax-exempt 501 (c) (4) group, it does not need or disclose who is funding its multi-million dollar operations to defeat Democratic candidates and politicians.
The new ad is part of a $ 20 million spending spree by the organization to defeat Biden’s agenda. The group is running a slew of other dishonest ads targeting swing neighborhood Democrats and urging them to vote against the Build Back Better plan.
In a press release on October 20, the group’s chairman said, “This bill has become incredibly toxic at home because the Americans know they are getting the crude end of the deal. … Any member of Congress would be stupid. also think of supporting it. “
In fact, poll after poll has shown that most American voters support the plan and its individual provisions.
