“The government of Punjab has canceled the permits of 31 buses belonging to Badals for tax evasion”

Measures have been taken in accordance with the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Law, said Punjab Transport Minister Amrinder Singh Raja Warring.

Punjab Transport Minister Amrinder Singh Raja Warring said on Wednesday that the department had recently canceled up to 125 bus permits, including 31 for buses owned by former Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chairman Sukhbir Singh Badal and to family members for vehicle tax evasion.

The action was taken under the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988 as violators attempted to trick the system into inflicting losses on the treasury, Warring said.

Reiterating his commitment to ensuring a transparent and fair transportation ecosystem in the state, Warring called on the department to step up vigilance against any attempt to plunder the chessboard. Those involved in wrongdoing will not be spared, he warned.

Nearly 30 integrated coach permits from Orbit Aviation, operated by Badals, as well as one of the New Fateh Travels, have been canceled for default by the Bathinda Regional Transport Authority (RTA), a-t -he declares.

16 other regular permits from Mandeep Travels have been canceled, a spokesperson for the department said. Tax liability had been pending against New Fateh Bus Service since January of this year, while Orbit Aviation delayed paying tax from March to October 2021, we learn.

The Faridkot RTA canceled 73 New Deep Bus Service regular bus permits, apart from its 3 integrated bus permits with a pending tax ??2.62 crores. Two regular bus permits from Malwa Bus Service were also canceled, the spokesperson added.

According to reports, Orbit Aviation and Rajdhani submitted ??10 crore with and 2 crore with the Bathinda and Hoshiarpur RTAs respectively following the cancellation of permits on November 12th.

“The cancellation was made after allowing the carriers time to pay the money. The department accepted payment in installments, but the carriers still haven’t paid on time, ”an official said.
